OULTON PARK PREVIEW
Ukdiggers.com Racing heads to Oulton Park at the weekend for round four of the 2006 Bennetts British Superbike championship where the crew will be working closely with new rider Steve Plater to further develop the Honda Fireblade on his second outing for the team.
Since recording two strong points finishes for Ukdiggers.com at Thruxton in the previous round Steve, aged 33, has travelled to France to race in the Le Mans 24-hour World Endurance race, an event he had committed to before joining the team.
Although initially Steve powered the bike through to a comfortable third place in his second one-hour session the bike was then taken over by French rider Patrick Piot who crashed heavily during the early laps of his second hour.
“Although we had lost a lot of time we still had 18 hours or so to race and if we could have continued may have been able to get back on course,” said Steve. “ But the bike was not stable and it would have been too dangerous to go on. It’s a shame because we were running third prior to the crash and ironically the two bikes ahead of us retired later in the night and we could have been looking at a win or at least a podium finish”
Steve, who hails from Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire has won at the Cheshire track on two previous occasions and is optimistic of a good result at Oulton Park this time.
“I love Oulton,” said Steve. “It is a fast and flowing circuit although very physical. This is only the second outing with the team so we have quite a bit more work to do to get the set up right. The test periods will be spent testing different settings and tyres prior to qualifying and all being well I will be chasing a couple of top results on Monday.”
Team owner Lloyd Hopkinson said: “I am really impressed with the way that Steve has settled into the team and the feedback he provided at Thruxton gave us the opportunity to develop the bike further.
